Im Finanzdienstleistungssektor stellen Investmentbanken Accountants ebenso ein wie Retail Banken, Private Equity-Firmen, Versicherungs- und Fondsgesellschaften. Unternehmen stellen Accountants ein, die beim Management von Kosten und Einnahmen, bei der Berechnung von Gewinnen und Verlusten, bei der Zukunftsplanung und bei der Berechnung ihrer Steuerverbindlichkeiten helfen.
Bei Investmentbanken üben Accountants eine Reihe unterschiedlicher Funktionen aus. Dazu zählen: Produktkontrolle (Accountants überwachen Gewinne und Verluste, die im Handelssaal entstehen), Finanzkontrolle (Accountants analysieren die Gesamtperformance der Bank. Sie erstellen Berichte zum Monatsende sowie Quartals-, Halbjahres- und Jahresberichte), internes Audit (Accountants sind dafür verantwortlich zu überprüfen, dass die Finanzsysteme und Kontrollen des Unternehmens eingehalten werden), regulatorisches Accounting (Accountants stellen sicher, dass die Weise, auf die die Bank über ihre Finanztätigkeiten Bericht erstattet, den gesetzlichen Vorgaben entspricht) und Treasury (Accountants strukturieren die finanziellen Angelegenheiten der Bank und arbeiten dabei oft mit den Steuerkollegen zusammen, damit die Bank über ausreichende Barmittel verfügt, um ihren Verpflichtungen nachzukommen).
Der überwiegende Teil der Accounting-Berufe ist in Industrie und Handel angesiedelt. Diese Accountants sind ungefähr in zwei Bereiche unterteilt. Zunächst Financial Accountants, die monatliche Bilanzen erstellen, den Überblick über finanzielle Transaktionen behalten und für die Einhaltung der Finanzgesetzgebung sorgen. Zweitens gibt es Management Accountants, die die Betriebsleistung überprüfen, zugrundeliegende Trends beobachten und die Geschäftsleitung beraten. Zunehmend sind Management Accountants auch für die Interpretation dieser Zahlen und die Beratung darüber, wie sie sich auf das Geschäft auswirken können, zuständig.
Es ist nicht sonderlich verwunderlich, dass es bei den Big 4 eine große Vielfalt von Accounting-Berufen gibt. Dazu zählen: Auditing (Wirtschaftsprüfung), Consulting oder Beratung (Accountants bieten Kunden strategische Beratung zu allen Belangen von Risikosystemen bis zur Unternehmensstrategie), Forensic Accounting (Accountants untersuchen unlautere Praktiken), Insolvenz und Sanierung (Accountants arbeiten daran, Unternehmen aus der Krise zu führen), und Steuer-Accountancy (Accountants verwalten die steuerlichen Verpflichtungen von Unternehmen und Einzelpersonen). Neben den Big 4 gibt es eine Auswahl an mittelgroßen und kleinen Wirtschaftsprüfungsgesellschaften, die ebenfalls Accountants beschäftigen, üblicherweise jedoch ein beschränkteres Angebot an Dienstleistungen offerieren.
