Anders als im Front-Office bauen Mitarbeiter im Bereich Operations keinen Kundenkontakt auf, um Einkünfte und Gewinne für die Bank zu erwirtschaften. Stattdessen handelt es sich bei der Operations-Abteilung um eine Support-Funktion – Operations-Mitarbeiter unterstützen andere Mitarbeiter und den Dealflow im Front-Office, um sicherzustellen, dass alles reibungslos abläuft und die Bank bezahlt wird.
Zu den Aufgaben einer Operations-Stelle zählen Trade Clearing und Settlement. Beim Clearing von Trades wird sichergestellt, dass die Aufzeichnungen, die einer Bank in Bezug auf den Verkauf einer finanziellen Sicherheit vorliegen, mit den Unterlagen übereinstimmen, über die die Bank oder Organisation, an die die Sicherheit verkauft wurde, verfügt. Das Clearing einfacher Trades erfolgt in den meisten Fällen automatisch über enorme Systeme wie Euroclear mit Sitz in Brüssel.
Settlements-Mitarbeiter stellen sicher, dass die von den Tradern der Bank gekauften und verkauften Aktien und Anteile gegen den richtigen Geldbetrag ausgetauscht werden. Eine Settlements-Stelle ist im Prinzip eine Verarbeitungs- und Kontrollposition. Sie involviert die Abstimmung von Anweisungen mit Gegenparteien und die Einrichtung und Überwachung von Zahlungen.
Settlements deckt alles von der Vorbereitung der für einen Verkauf notwendigen Unterlagen bis hin zur Sicherstellung ab, dass die Bank für alle verkauften und gekauften Aktien bezahlt wurde. Settlements-Experten lösen auch Probleme mit Gegenparteien, falls es dazu kommen sollte, und sie überprüfen nicht abgewickelte Trades, um den zeitgerechten Abschluss sicherzustellen. Viele Berufe erfordern auch die Kenntnis von Systemen wie CCASS, DCCASS und SWIFT sowie Euroclear/Clearstream.
Da die Financial Services-Operations zunehmend automatisiert ablaufen, umfassen die meisten Stellen im Operations-Sektor Eingriffe, falls diese Systeme ausfallen, oder die Neuentwicklung oder Optimierung von Abläufen.
Junior-Mitarbeiter verbringen in den Bereichen Clearing und Settlements viel Zeit mit der Bewältigung der sogenannten Ausnahmen. Ihre Aufgabe ist es, herauszufinden, was schiefgelaufen ist. Ein Großteil der einfachen Clearing- und Settlement-Arbeit findet an kostengünstigen Standorten wie Mumbai (Indien) oder den Philippinen statt.
Näher am Handelssaal ist die Rolle des Trade Support-Officer. Sie betreut ggf. eine ganze Reihe verschiedener Anlageklassen, von Aktien und Anleihen über Rohstoffe bis hin zu Derivaten. Trade Support Officer befassen sich mit allen Fragen von Tradern – alles von Abstimmungsfragen bis zu Diskrepanzen zwischen den verschiedenen an einem Trade beteiligten Gegenparteien.
Fortgeschrittenere Operations-Stellen, die höher in der Hierarchie angesiedelt sind, sind eher strategischer Natur. Operations-Abteilungen stellen eine Menge Projektmanager und Business Analysten ein, die z. B. Wege zur Rationalisierung des Abläufe finden oder mit Offshore-Teams zusammenarbeiten um herauszufinden, wie man Prozesse effizienter gestalten und Kosten (weiter) reduzieren kann.
Nicht nur Banken beschäftigen Settlements-Mitarbeiter – Hedge Fonds beschäftigen z. B. Settlements-Experten, die sicherstellen, dass Trader gebucht und beim Prime Broker/Custodian angemeldet werden.
