Im Consulting geht es um das Troubleshooting für Unternehmen. Oft arbeitet ein kleines Team von Consultants über einen Zeitraum von zwei Wochen bis zu einem Jahr in einem bestimmten Unternehmen, um bei der Lösung komplexer Geschäftsprobleme zu helfen oder die Arbeitsabläufe zu optimieren.
Die meisten Consultants arbeiten in unterschiedlichen Branchen und bieten den weltweit größten Unternehmen in Branchen wie Energie und Industrie, Verbrauchsgüter und Einzelhandel sowie Banken und Finanzdienstleistern Beratung.
In der Finanzdienstleistungsbranche offerieren Consultants Beratung zu einer Vielfalt von Fragen, wie z. B. Entwicklung einer Wachstumsstrategie, Portfolio-Management, Verbesserung der Eigenkapitalquote oder (zunehmend) Risikomanagement und regulatorische Lösungen, technologische Verbesserungen und operative und personalbezogene Belange.
Ein großer Anteil der Arbeit von Consultants befasst sich mit der Prozessverbesserung oder Betriebsprozessgestaltung. Dazu zählen Prozessmodellierung und -Mapping, Six Sigma und Business Process Transformation. Wie oben erwähnt stellen Banken Consultants oft ein, um ihnen bei der Implementierung technologischer Veränderungen zu helfen, also sind z. B. IT-Consultants mit Kenntnis der IT-Systeme von Finanzdienstleistern wie Murex and Calypso sehr gefragt.
Consultants für Risiko- und regulatorische Lösungen müssen in der Lage sein, Firmen in Hinblick auf ihre jeweilige Finanzmarktaufsicht zu beraten und ihnen Beratung zur Kapitalplanung und zu kapitaleffizienten Strukturen vor dem Hintergrund neuer Regulierungen zu bieten, die erhöhte Kapitalerfordernisse für Banken auf globaler Basis vorschreiben.
Die Consulting-Laufbahn bei den großen Consulting-Firmen verläuft oft hierarchisch. Hochschulabsolventen steigen als Analysten ein, bevor sie zum Junior (oder Associate) Consultant, Consultant, Teamleiter, Manager, Direktor und schließlich Partner aufsteigen.
In vielen Fällen verfügen Consultants über direkte Berufserfahrungen im dem Gebiet, auf dem sie Beratungsdienstleistungen anbieten. Allerdings ist dies nicht immer der Fall. Viele Consultants haben ein MBA-Studium absolviert, dies ist jedoch keine Vorraussetzung. In manchen Fällen agieren große strategische Consulting-Firmen wie Bain & Company, Boston Consulting und McKinsey & Co. als Sponsoren ihrer Mitarbeiter, um eine MBA-Qualifikation zu erwerben.
Stellen für Junior Consultants beinhalten eine Vielzahl an quantitativer Arbeit, während Senior Stellen sich auf den Kundenkontakt und den Verkauf von Consulting-Dienstleistungen konzentrieren. Consultants arbeiten oftmals als kleine Teams beim Kunden.
Zu den gefragten Kompetenzen für Consulting-Stellen im Finanzdienstleistungssektor zählen: Fähigkeit zur Teamarbeit, analytische Kenntnisse und statistische Fertigkeiten, die Fähigkeit zum Aufbau und zur Pflege von Kundenbeziehungen sowie ausgezeichnete logische Fähigkeiten.
