Equity oder Eigenkapital ist ein anderer Begriff für die Vermögenswerte eines Unternehmens nach Abzahlung aller Schulden. Aktien und Wertpapiere – auch unter dem Namen Equities bekannt – garantieren ihren Eigentümern den Teilbesitz an diesen Vermögenswerten.
Traditionell werden Aktien an den großen globalen Börsen wie in Frankfurt, New York oder Tokio gehandelt. Allerdings findet das Equities-Trading heute zunehmend abseits der Börsen in sogenannten „Dark Pools“ statt, bei denen die Käufer und Verkäufer von Equities abseits der Börse Handel treiben können, um zu vermeiden, dass große Kauf- und Verkaufsaufträge den Aktienpreis beeinflussen.
In diesem Geschäft tummeln sich eine Vielzahl von Unternehmen wie Banken, Brokerhäuser, Agency-Trader, Asset Management-Firmen und Hedgefonds.
Zur Aufgabe des Equities-Salesmitarbeiters zählt der Kundenkontakt – mit wohlhabenden Einzelpersonen, Pensionsfonds oder anderen institutionellen Investoren – und deren Beratung im Hinblick darauf, wann sie bestimmte Aktien kaufen und verkaufen sollten.
Die Sales-Mitarbeiter unterhalten daher Kontakt mit Equities-Tradern, die den Trade im Namen des Kunden ausführen. In ihrer grundlegendsten Aufgabe agieren Trader als Market Maker. Market Maker sind in der Lage, dem Kunden sowohl Kauf- als auch Verkaufspreise für bestimmte Aktien zu nennen (je nach Vorliebe eines Kunden) und gleichzeitig mit dem Bid-Offer-Spread (der Differenz zwischen dem Preis, zu dem die Aktie gekauft wird, und dem Preis, zu dem die Aktie dem Kunden verkauft wird) Geld zu verdienen.
Der Handel mit Bargeld oder einfachen Equity-Produkten findet heute elektronisch mithilfe von automatisierten Trading-Systemen statt, die Käufer und Verkäufer aufeinander abstimmen. Ebenso wird ein Großteil von Equities-Trades heute von algorithmischen Trading-Systemen bestimmt, in denen die Investmentstrategien in mathematischen Formeln umgesetzt sind. Trotzdem bleibt der Bedarf an menschlicher Intervention bestehen. Wenn z. B. große, sogenannte Block Sales platziert werden, sind ggf. Execution-Trader erforderlich, um die Trades in kleinere, besser handhabbare Einheiten zu stückeln, um den besten Preis im Markt zu erzielen.
Sales-Trader sind eine Art von Mischform zwischen Sales-Mitarbeitern und Tradern – sie empfehlen Kunden Produkte und führen dann die auf ihren Empfehlungen basierenden Trades aus.
Sales-Mitarbeiter verkaufen selbst Equities und werden auch benötigt, um elektronische Trading-Ressourcen zu verkaufen. Banken stellen z. B. Personen ein, um Kunden für ihren Direct Market Access (DMA) oder ihre elektronischen Trading-Systeme zu finden.
Neben tatsächlichen Sales-Mitarbeitern und Tradern umfassen Equities-Stellen auch IT-Programmierer, Quants und Equity-Researcher, die die Equity-Sales- und Trading-Ressourcen eines Unternehmens unterstützen.
