Kredit-Mitarbeiter werden häufig als „Kreditrisikomanager“, „Kreditanalysten“ oder „Credit Officer“ bezeichnet, während manche Banken einfach die Führungsebene gefolgt vom Aufgabenbereich angeben, z. B. „Vice President, Credit“. Ungeachtet des Titels sind Credit-Mitarbeiter im Lauf ihrer Karriere prinzipiell mit der Prüfung von Kreditanträgen der Bankkunden beschäftigt (z. B. von Unternehmen, die Kredite aufnehmen wollen) oder von Finanzinstitutionen, die die Gegenparteien der Firma sind.
Unter Kreditrisiko wird die Gefahr verstanden, dass ein Kreditnehmer seinen Zahlungsverpflichtungen nicht nachkommen kann. Kreditrisikoanalysten und -sachbearbeiter helfen bei der Minderung dieser Risiken durch die Vorbereitung von Kreditanträgen und Bonitätsprüfungen, die dem Unternehmen unabhängige Bewertungen über den finanziellen Status zukünftiger und bestehender Kreditnehmer bieten.
Kreditanalysten arbeiten mit dem Lending-Team zusammen, um sicherzustellen, dass Kreditanträge oder -verlängerungen entsprechend den internen Kreditrichtlinien und gesetzlichen Vorgaben genehmigt oder abgelehnt werden. Die meisten Kreditgeber verwenden ihre eigenen Modelle (Credit Scorecards), um potenzielle und bestehende Kunden je nach Risiko zu bewerten. Faktoren wie Unternehmenserfahrung, Managementerfahrung, Qualität der Aktiva, Fremdkapital und Liquiditätsgrad werden häufig einbezogen.
Das Ziel lautet, durch die Strukturierung, Sanktionierung, Überwachung und Kontrolle der Kreditanträge sowie durch die laufende Einhaltung von Kreditqualitätsanforderungen eine hohe Kreditqualität sicherzustellen. Ferner haben Kreditanalysten die Aufgabe, regelmäßige Prüfungen derjenigen Kunden durchzuführen, deren Kreditportfolios einer genauen Überwachung bedürfen. Dies hilft dabei sicherzustellen, dass jegliche Verschlechterung rasch erkannt und das Kreditrisiko gemindert wird.
Kreditexperten, speziell Senior-Mitarbeiter, pflegen ein enges Arbeitsverhältnis mit den Unternehmen und müssen dessen Geschäftsmodell genau verstehen. Sie müssen sich auch während der gesamten Kreditlaufzeit mit der Finanzanalyse und den Risikoprofilen ihrer zugewiesenen Sektoren, Kreditnehmer und Gegenparteien auf dem Laufenden halten. Schließlich müssen sie den Wunsch des Frontoffice-Personals, das Geschäft auszubauen, mit dem Bedarf einer vernünftigen Kreditvergabe abwägen und solide Kreditentscheidungen fällen.
Kreditrisikobelange betreffen unterschiedliche Arten von Transaktionen – darunter Corporate Banking, Projektfinanzierung, Structured Trade und Syndications. Und nicht nur Banken beschäftigen Kredit-Experten. Zum Beispiel werden sie von Private Equity Firmen eingesetzt, um das Kreditrisiko von Gegenparteien und investmentbezogenen Dienstleistern zu steuern.
Kredit-Berufe können auch sehr speziell ausfallen, z. B. Stellen, die sich ausschließlich auf das Gegenparteirisiko konzentrieren und Due-Diligence-Besuche bei Finanzinstitutionen zur Einholung von Kreditinformationen involvieren. Finanzielle Unterlagen werden auf Excel-Tabellen analysiert, damit die Bank einen realistischen Eindruck von der zukünftigen betrieblichen Performance gewinnen kann.
