Private Banker und Wealth Manager helfen sehr wohlhabenden Menschen bei der Verwaltung ihres Vermögens. Dies geschieht auf vertraulicher Basis und fern der Neugierde von Klatschkolumnisten und Paparazzi.
Karrieren im Wealth Management fallen in zwei Kategorien:
Private Banker – helfen Kunden, ihr Vermögen vorausblickend anzulegen und Risiken zu vermeiden, die den Wert ihres Vermögens reduzieren könnten. Sie bieten auch Steuer- und Pensionsberatung, helfen Kunden, eine Strategie für wohltätige Spenden zu entwickeln, und beraten sie, wie sie ihr Vermögen am besten der nächsten Generation vererben können.
Private Client Broker – helfen Kunden beim Kauf und Verkauf von Finanzprodukten, insbesondere von Aktien. Doch sie offerieren auch Produktberatung.
Bei den Kunden von Wealth Managern kann es sich um alle erdenklichen Arten von Klienten handeln, vom Chef oder Eigentümer eines Unternehmens bis hin zu Immobilienmagnaten, Investmentbankern und Profifußballern.
Privatbanken interessieren sich üblicherweise für Kunden, die mehrere 100.000 Euro oder Franken anzulegen haben. Manche befassen sich nur mit Kunden, die über ein Finanzvermögen von über 30 Mio. Euro oder Franken verfügen.
Eine Karriere im Private Banking fällt meistens in eine von drei Hauptkategorien: Investition von Geld für bestehende Kunden, Aufbau von Kundenbeziehungen (d. h. „Relationship Manager“) oder Betreuung von Back-Office-Funktionen wie Human Resources oder Buchhaltung.
Private Banker investieren entweder selbst das Geld ihrer Kunden oder bieten ihren Kunden detaillierte Beratung zur Investition ihrer Vermögens an. Üblicherweise gibt es Produktspezialisten, die Experten in einer bestimmten Anlagenklasse sind, wie z. B. festverzinsliche Wertpapiere, Aktien, strukturierte Produkte jeglicher Art oder Investitionen in Private-Equity- und Hedgefonds.
Privatbanker auf der Relationship-Seite sind im Grunde genommen Sales-Experten, die ihre Zeit damit verbringen, Verbindungen mit Kunden zu pflegen und die Dienstleistungen der Bank zu verkaufen.
Relationship Private Banking kann eine Menge von Geschäftsreisen und engen Kontakt mit interessanten, ungewöhnlichen und anspruchsvollen Persönlichkeiten einschließen. Wenn ein Relationship Private Banker die Bedürfnisse eines Kunden festgestellt hat, werden Investment-Spezialisten einbezogen, die eine detailliertere Lösung zusammenstellen.
Bei Private Client Brokern gibt es wiederum zwei Arten: diejenigen, die mit einem Vollmachtsvertrag arbeiten, in dessen Rahmen wohlhabende Kunden ihre allgemeine Investmentstrategie bekannt geben und der Broker eigenverantwortlich die Finanzprodukte kauft und verkauft, die er für angebracht hält; und diejenigen, die auf Beratungsbasis tätig sind, d. h. der Broker berät den Kunden zur Investition, benötigt aber dessen Genehmigung, bevor er eine Investition tätigt. Junior Client Broker sind meistens beratend tätig.
