Finanzanalysten in Banken bewerten Aktien und Anleihen und sind zumeist auf bestimmte Branchen spezialisiert.
Zu den wichtigsten Branchen für Aktienanalysten zählen: Öl und Gas, Automobilindustrie, Metall und Bergbau, Einzelhandel, Banken und Finanzdienstleister, Pharmazeutik, Technologie, Industriebetriebe und Immobilienunternehmen. Aktienanalysten konzentrieren sich auf einen dieser Sektoren und erlangen eine profunde Kenntnis über die Unternehmen, die in der Branche tätig sind. Basierend auf diesem Wissen geben sie „Buy-“, „Hold-“ oder „Sell-“Empfehlungen ab und beraten auf diesem Weg Investoren, wie sie mit den Aktien verfahren sollten.
Die gefragtesten Equity Researcher sind diejenigen, die von externen Organisationen wie Starmine und Institutional Investor Magazine hoch bewertet werden.
Traditionell gesehen erstellen Equity Researcher lange, detaillierte Berichte, in denen sie Investoren beraten, ob sie in bestimmte Aktien investieren sollten. Diese Berichte werden von Equity Sales-Mitarbeitern bei Investmentbanken und Brokerfirmen bei der Aufnahme von Verkaufsgesprächen verwendet und Investoren erhalten neue Vorschläge dazu, welche Aktien sie kaufen sollten. Im Laufe der Zeit hat sich die Rolle des Researchers zunehmend dahingehend entwickelt, dass von ihm erwartet wird, seine Vorschläge selbst an die Investoren weiterzugeben und eine stärkere Marketing-Rolle in enger Zusammenarbeit mit den Sales-Mitarbeitern zu übernehmen.
Obwohl Equity Researcher und Research Associates eine wichtige Rolle beim Verkauf von Equity-Produkten spielen, befinden sie sich bisweilen in einer schwierigen Position, weil sie nicht direkt Erlöse erwirtschaften. In der Folge sind bisweilen Anschuldigungen gegen Researcher bei Investmentbanken erhoben worden, dass sie absichtlich positive Berichte über potenzielle Kunden schreiben, um für die Bank Geschäfte in Bereichen wie Fusionen & Übernahmen und Kapitalmärkten zu generieren. Gleichermaßen handelt es sich um eine Herausforderung, dass die eingehende Analyse eines Unternehmens vom Zugang zur Managementetage abhängt, die Führungskräfte aber oft nicht gewillt sind, mit Analysten zu sprechen, die in der Vergangenheit über ihr Unternehmen negativ berichtet haben.
In Fixed-Income analysieren Researcher die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass der Emittent einer Anleihe seinen Rückzahlungsverpflichtungen nicht nachkommen kann. Rating-Agenturen wie Moody's, Standard & Poors und Fitch geben Ratings ab, die die Wahrscheinlichkeit einer Rückzahlung bewerten, wobei mit AAA bewertete Anleihen als die sichersten Investitionen gelten, während bei mit C bewerteten Anleihen eine Rückzahlung in dem vorgegebenen Zeitrahmen eher unwahrscheinlich ist. Fixed-Income-Researcher bei Investmentbanken fällen ähnliche Urteile und spezialisieren sich üblicherweise im Laufe ihrer Karriere auf eine bestimmte Art von Anleihen – entweder Investment-Grade (starke Wahrscheinlichkeit einer Rückzahlung) oder High-Yield bzw. notleidende Anleihen, bei denen die Wahrscheinlichkeit einer Rückzahlung weit geringer ausfällt.
