Dabei handelt es sich um das klassische Schaltergeschäft, in dem standardisierte Bankdienstleistungen wie Girokonten, Hypotheken, Privatkredite oder Sparpläne an normale Privatkunden vertrieben werden. Auch das wachsende Online-Banking zählt zu dieser Sparte.
Retail Banking umfasst auch einige Vermögensmanagement-Dienstleistungen, wobei es sich jedoch weniger um die Investmentberatung für Personen mit hohem Vermögen dreht, sondern um den weniger Begüterten mit Standardprodukten den Vermögensaufbau und die Altersvorsorge zu ermöglichen.
Schon Nachwuchsbanker erhalten in den Bankfilialen Kontakt zum Endkunden mit seinen Wünschen und Beschwerden, wobei den Kunden die für ihre Bedürfnisse geeigneten Produkte vermittelt werden sollen. Von Retail Bankern wird auch erwartet, administrative Aufgaben wie die Eröffnung und Schließung von Konten, Änderungen von Kundendetails oder die Einrichtung von Daueraufträgen durchzuführen.
Einige dieser Support-Funktionen werden auch telefonisch umgesetzt, weshalb Retail Banken eine große Anzahl von Mitarbeitern in ihren Callcentern beschäftigen.
Eine Karriere im Retail Banking beginnt auch heute in den deutschsprachigen Ländern noch mit der klassischen Bankausbildung. In dem Bereich spielen indes Programme eine große Rolle, die Ausbildung und Studium miteinander verbinden. Doch zunehmend werden auch Hochschulabsolventen mit der Aussicht, rasch leitende Positionen zu übernehmen, angestellt.
Abgesehen von den traditionellen Berufen im Retail Banking stehen noch eine ganze Reihe anderer Laufbahnen offen. Banken stellen Produktmanager und Produktentwickler ein, welche die den Kunden angebotenen Dienstleistungen entwickeln und umsetzen, egal, ob es sich um Kreditkarten, Online-, Mobile-Banking- oder Versicherungsprodukte handelt.
Darüber hinaus gibt es auch Marketingstellen, in denen Mitarbeiter die Nachfrage nach bestimmten Produkten oder Dienstleistungen eruieren und die entsprechenden Werbekampagnen entwickeln und implementieren.
Auch Stellen im Operations Management, u. a. für Business-Analysten, Change Manager oder Projektmanager werden angeboten. Diese Mitarbeiter sind verantwortlich für die Entwicklung operativer Effizienzen (darunter Downsizing-Strategien), für das Betreiben der Systeme und der Prozesse der Bank, Diversifizierung ihres Produktangebots sowie die Suche nach neuen Wegen, um die Arbeitsweise des Unternehmens in den Bereichen Finanzen, Risiko und Technologie umzugestalten.
Risiko ist eine weitere Funktion im Retail Banking. Dabei kann es sich um allgemeine Risiken, aber auch um Kredit-, operative, Markt-Risiken usf. handeln. Stellen in der Betrugsprävention sind ebenfalls für die Risikoabteilungen von Retail Banken von zentraler Bedeutung, gleich, ob diese den Schutz persönlicher Angaben (d. h. Datenschutz), Anti-Geldwäsche (AML) oder Bestechungs- und Korruptionsprävention umfassen.
